Power Supply

Post by Steve001 »

Read a post in the week and cannot find it now,

Someone was asking on what bench power supplies that people where using for exerimenting with E Blocks and there projects.

My first unit was made from from a old 14V battery drill charger unit that i had spare from a failed unit the insides where chucked away and the case was just used for holding the battery, a On/Off switch was fitted several terminals for 14V and 5V outputs inside there was a LT1003 5Volt 5Amp regulator on a big heatsink at the back with some fuses on the output . Bit of a pain having to charge up the battrey every now and again used this for aprox 1 year

I then sumbled across a Cosel 5V 5Amp power supply still in its original box at a local radio ham fair, the guy obviously didn't know what he was selling and i bought it for £5  £100 + in RS
Got a box made at work and used that for quite a long time (still use it sometimes)

I stumbled across a Farnell Tops 2 Power supply ( 5v 5Amp +/- 15 V 1Amp) on Ebay. Again the guy obviously didn't know what he was selling a grabbed my self a bargin at £40 delviered however it it quite big and heavy bidding started at 99p .
There are quite a few of the farnell power supplys popping up on ebay so keep an eye out and grab your self a bargin , there is a tops 1 power supply but the current outputs are signifacntly lower ,

The LT30 /2 farnell power supplies they also pop up on ebay also but tend to go quite quicky and are very sort after items and the auctions can go silly, good power supply but big and heavy.

Hope this is of some help

Steve

forgot to mention this company too circuit specialists europe they make a quite a few power supplies first saw one of there units at a radio ham fair looked quite good build quality nice big clear display but a bit more than what i wanted to pay.

http://www.circuitspecialists.eu/

the guy at the fair did tell me that they do have a ebay shop and they do sell off warranty repaired items from time to time although they do only give a 90 day warranty on these units,

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/circuitspecialistseurope

I have watched a couple of power supplies on there ebay shop and saw a repaired tripple output supply go for more than a new one

I have some drawing for power supply circuits if anybody wants them let me know

Hi Steve

They are generally quite good supplies. Ive used them in the past, main problem as they get older is the voltage/current POTs get noisy, making it difficult to set the output accuratly.
1 in 10 people understand binary, the other one doesn't !

Hi john

Thanks for that we have one at work that dosen't get used much now :( supose the pots get noisey due to dust and wear i would replace them for abw1 pots from farnell have used them in very hostile enviroments and have proved to be very good and reliable
