Mechanical Design Engineer
This role involves being a mechanical designer of products and solutions suitable for educational institutions, understanding market trends and latest developments in
technology, having some understanding of subject matter and a capability of technical writing as required.
Person specification:
- Understanding of MS Word and Excel to a medium/high level
- Degree qualified with 3+ years’ experience in a design environment
- 3+ years of employment experience in a technical role
- Use of a 3D cad package (preferably Solidworks) to produce product models, detailed engineering drawings and production information
- Ability to produce and maintain of BOM's
- Ability to generate costing estimates
- Ability to source new components and obtaining quotes and pricing for both standard components and bespoke items
- Knowledge of basic machining, sheet metal and joining processes, and their relevant tolerances, limits and fits
- Knowledge and appropriate selection of common engineering metal alloys such as steels, aluminium etc plus common engineering plastics such as acrylic and ABS
- Knowledge and appropriate selection of finishes for aesthetic and corrosion resistance including painting/powder coating, plating, anodising etc.
- Knowledge of common place mechanical components such as bearings, couplings, gears, timing pulleys etc and their appropriate limits and fits
- Knowledge and appreciation of measuring techniques for mechanical parameters such as force, torque, strain, pressure, flow rate, displacement etc
- Good Theoretical Engineering background. Ability to do design calculations and understand the theories being taught with the equipment.
- Be able to take a pragmatic, hands-on approach to problems solving, both in the development of new products and in the day to day production requirements of existing products.
- Use of basic workshop tools and ability to build and test prototypes.
- Be able to work with electrical and electronic engineers in the development of new products, awareness of mounting of PCB’s and electrical components such as switches, panel connectors circuit breakers etc
- Be able to write technical documentation, both for internal use and as an input into customer facing documents such as product manuals and user information
- Ability to perform product demonstrations both internally and externally to customers and end users
- Assist in the production of technical briefs for new products
Desirable:
- Knowledge of setting up and running Solidworks PDM to control CAD models and drawing issues and revisions
- Knowledge of transducers and sensors of various types and their advantages/disadvantages in terms of cost and accuracy. An appreciation (but not detailed knowledge) of the required signal conditioning requirements of each
- Knowledge of the educational products market
- Appreciation of marketing and communications to customers
- Knowledge of “CE” marking and relevant standards that apply to the machinery directive.
- Knowledge and use of 3D printers and small-scale laser cutters.
- Knowledge of basic CNC machinery, and robotics
- Knowledge of basic pneumatic systems, components, and control functions
- Knowledge of small electrical motors
- Good technical writing experience

Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday 8am – 6pm. Home working discussed on an individual basis.
We offer 23 days (+ statutory) holidays per year plus a company pension scheme and life insurance after a qualifying period (pro rata if part time)
Salary: £36,000-£40,000 dependent on experience
